Translating Chaos

On March 7th, the North Central Louisiana Arts Council and 102 a Bistro will have an opening reception for an art show titled “Translating Chaos”. The show will feature select pieces from my new work as well as works from local artist Tym Toussaint. You can read more about the show on NCLAC’s blog.

Anita’s Bridal Portraits – Ruston, LA

I just photographed Anita and Philip’s wedding this past Saturday so now I can post some of her bridal portraits. Our first session rescheduled due to the threat of rain. Of course in Ruston when there’s a threat of rain, we never see it. There was a 10% chance of rain the day of the shoot and we managed one pose outside before it began to storm. We ran inside to wait out the rain and wind. I was lacking a decent background indoors so I resorted to some technical lighting skills to make lemonade out of lemons. The rain passed and the wind subsided long enough for us to run outside to get a few shots. Anita’s one request was a bridal portrait at sunset. She proudly displayed the final photograph as a 20×30 gallery wrapped canvas at her reception. Special thanks to upcoming photographer, Michael Butler, for his lighting assistance.

I do love an indoor location for bridal portraits when it is 100 degrees outside. Jenny found such a great house in Natchitoches, LA for her bridals that we didn’t even need the second location. By the way, that is a handmade bed that she is sitting on and it is for sale for $16,000 if anyone is interested. :-)

A Second Home

Last weekend Amanda and I flew to Colorado to join my brother and his wife along with my dad for a week long vacation in the San Juan Mountains. Tuesday, during our excursion into the mountains, my dad passed away due to heart complications after an accident on his ATV. We were hours into the mountains without communication and help could not reach us in time.

Colorado was a second home to Dad. Even the locals who lived there knew him because he was there so often. He loved Colorado so much in fact that he called me 2 weeks before we were to leave to let me know that he was packed and ready. He was looking forward to this trip for a long time. I know he enjoyed the time spent with us and his sister the few days we were there.

I remember the trips to Colorado when we were kids. It was during those trips that I became interested in photography. Dad had a Pentax M7 that he used to photograph landscapes that are hanging on the walls of his house to this day. I guess he tried to bring Colorado home.

These photographs are for you, Dad. I love you and miss you.

Lauren & Clinton’s Wedding at the Historic Firehouse

Lauren and Clinton tied the knot at the Historic Firehouse here in Ruston. We also photographed some of Lauren’s bridal portraits there a few weeks before. Here are a few from her bridal session and their wedding. Oh and she’s the first bride I know to wear TOMS with her wedding dress!

I teamed up with him this weekend to do a shoot for both of our portfolios. My buddy, Matt Lange, came along to beef up his portfolio as well. Matt’s a video/graphic wizard. Matt’s Trek for Hope Update

Back in April, I introduced you to a gentleman by the name of Matt Parrish. Matt is walking across the United States from Tampa, Florida to Los Angeles, California and back to raise donations and awareness for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. You can read the original post here. He has already walked over 1800 miles with about 850 more to go before turning around and doing it all over again. Matt is currently held up in El Paso, Texas waiting for fellow supporter, Chris Williams, to arrive with his escort vehicle. Chris has restored an M998 Medivac Humvee and plans to provide water and shelter to Matt on the next stretch of his trek. Donations to Matt and Chris will help fuel the vehicle and supply them with water and shelter through blistering temperatures over 100 degrees. Keeping Matt on his Trek will help him spread the message about this great cause.

Anticipating Colorado

Later this summer, Amanda and I will be headed to Colorado for a week. I am itching to go. We have a couple of months left before we go but I’m already packing my camera gear. I’m trying to narrow down what I want to take and what I need to take. I want to take it all but that’s just not going to happen. I’m also planning on renting and buying additional gear to take with me. It is difficult to narrow down which gear to take. I’ve been playing with film again and of course I want to take some of that.

The last trip to Colorado was about 3 years ago for our honeymoon. I only took a Canon G9 point and shoot camera with me. I have several great photos from the trip too. One in particular was printed as a 30×45 and placed above my couch for a while. That print now resides at my dad’s house. I was looking through those photos today and came across a series of photos I took atop Tin Cup Pass. The elevation at this point is just above 12,000 feet above sea level. I stitched these photos together to make a 360 horizontal view. Use your mouse to pan the scene left and right.

Out for a Stroll

A couple of days ago I got a message from a friend on Facebook telling me about a soldier who was walking across the United States. Yes, I said walking across the United States. Let that sink in for a second. Ok, now clear the image of Forrest Gump out of your head. I immediately looked up his Facebook page. After I absorbed the information from there, I headed over to his blog to get more. I learned about Matt Parrish, a medic for the Army, and his courageous trek across the country to raise money and awareness for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

The Special Operations Warrior Foundation is a non-profit organization who provides assistance to children who have lost a parent while serving for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps Special Operations during an operational or training mission. This includes some 50,000 military special operations and support personnel in the United States and overseas.

After reading his blog, the foundation’s website, and the Facebook page, I knew that I needed to photograph this soldier while I could. I left a message on his page and we met up Tuesday afternoon when he made it to Ruston. We visited for a little bit to let the sun get right before heading off to take some photos. My friend Jonathan Ford came along to help and also recorded a short interview. Jonathan and Donald Page were gracious to offer him a place to stay for the night. It also opened another opportunity for Donald to take a few photos as well.

Matt is one of the nicest guys I have had the opportunity to meet. He left the comfort of air conditioning, a bed, and the smiling face of his son behind to do what he feels God is telling him to do. He is walking from Tampa, Florida to Los Angeles, California and back. The round trip is expected to take about a year to complete. He started with a full pack of essential gear on his back, an iPhone, a direction, and most importantly…his faith. He has been in the news and has found an amazing amount of support along the way. One of his supporters donated a jogging stroller to carry his gear and take the load off his back. He also has supporters at New Balance and Magnum Boots who provide him with much needed shoes. He showed me a pair of New Balance shoes that had about 750 miles on them. They were worn thin and without any tread.

Wedding at Hemingbough in St. Francisville

A few weekends ago I got to tag along with Jennifer Robison to shoot a wedding at Hemingbough in St. Francisville. If you recall, Amanda and I were married there a couple of years ago, as well as our friends Matt and Chelsea. It was great to go back and see everything. I had a blast second-shooting with Jennifer and getting to work with Megan and Drew. Here are some of the photos from my viewpoint.

Jen & Brian’s Wedding in Jackson Square

A couple of weekend’s ago, I drove down to New Orleans to photograph Jen & Brian’s wedding. This was my first time meeting either of them. I was a little nervous until Ashley, one of the bridesmaids, got us stuck in the elevator at the Westin. I’m only kidding Ashley. It was actually someone else in the elevator that caused the stall. Being stuck in an elevator for several minutes only moments from meeting a bride for the first time will either make your nerves shoot through the roof or, as in my case, relax them. After that it was smooth sailing. Their ceremony was in Jackson Square followed by their reception at Pat O’Brien’s. I had a great time meeting Jen, Brian, their friends, and families. Oh and to make their wedding even more special was the fact that it was the night of the “supermoon;” an event that only happens every 18 years!

Jenni & Billy’s Wedding

Jenni and Billy have been friends of ours for a few years. Jenni was actually a bridesmaid in our wedding. Naturally, I was excited to hear that they were getting married. They tied the knot the weekend before last in Monroe at the Feazel Chapel. They had a chartered bus and a party bus to help the guests get to the reception at Calvert Crossing in Calhoun. I see why musicians travel on buses now. The party bus was really nice so I couldn’t pass up taking a few photos of Jenni and Billy in it. Congratulations again you two!!
